The Role of the Laity in the Catholic Church

**Presented by Mr. Naris Rwangoga, Chairman of KKCRA, to Nyamirama Parish Leaders during a Retreat at Nyamirama Parish, Makiro Deanery, Kabale Diocese**

During the second day t retreat organized by KKCRA at Nyamirama Parish, Mr. Naris Rwangoga, Chairman of KKCRA, delivered an insightful presentation on the role of the laity in the Catholic Church. His address covered various aspects, including the church hierarchy, the identity and duties of the laity, and the mission of Christ as outlined in the scriptures. This report summarizes his presentation, highlighting key points and discussions.

 *Understanding Church Hierarchy*

Mr. Rwangoga began by explaining the church hierarchy in detail. He emphasized the importance of understanding where the laity fits within this structure and the significant role they play in the church's mission.

*Who is the Laity?*

The concept of the laity was thoroughly discussed. Mr. Rwangoga described the laity as all baptized members of the church who are not part of the ordained clergy. He explained that the laity have specific rights and duties, which are crucial for the church's function and mission.

*Rights and Duties of the Laity*

The rights and duties of the laity were well articulated. These include participating actively in the church’s mission, evangelizing, and being involved in community service. Mr. Rwangoga referenced Luke 4:18-19 to underscore the calling of every layperson, emphasizing that Christ has sent all believers to carry out His mission.

*Scriptural Foundation*

He elaborated on the scriptural basis for the laity's mission. John 10:10 was highlighted, stressing that Jesus desires believers to lead fulfilling lives by serving others. Additionally, John 20:23 was discussed, where Jesus sends His followers as the Father sent Him. This instruction calls every Christian to be an active participant in spreading the Gospel.

*Leadership Among the Laity*

Leadership among the laity was another focal point. Mr. Rwangoga explained what it means to lead as a layperson in the church. He clarified common misconceptions about church leadership:

- **Church Leadership is not wealth.**
- **Church Leadership is not to eat.**
- **Church Leadership is not hereditary.**
- **Church Leadership is not for others; it's your responsibility.**
- **Church Leadership is not a salary.**
- **Church Leadership is not a job; it's a calling that must be embraced now.**

*The Mission of Christ*

Mr. Rwangoga emphasized that our mission and vision must be modeled on the ministry of Jesus Christ. He referred to Isaiah 61:1-2 and Luke 4:18-19, which speak of the Spirit of the Lord being upon Christ to bring good news to the poor. This mission involves:

- **Economic Development**: Helping people move from poverty to prosperity.
- **Societal Development**: Fostering a full and integral life that includes body, mind, and spirit.

*Practical Applications*

He discussed practical applications of this mission, such as the importance of village savings groups and other economic initiatives that fight poverty. Questions were raised about helping Christians identify and embrace opportunities around them, linking them to well-off urban people, and assisting those in difficulty. Topics like family well-being, preventing family breakups, and addressing various societal issues were also covered.

*Proclaiming Liberty and Health*

Mr. Rwangoga spoke about proclaiming liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind. This means addressing societal issues that imprison people, whether physically or metaphorically, and ensuring the church provides pastoral care for the sick and needy. He stressed the need for special pastoral care teams and health centers within parishes.

*Setting Free the Oppressed*

He highlighted the importance of setting free the oppressed, guiding with truth, and liberating individuals from various forms of oppression. Announcing that the time has come for the Lord to save His people involves living a holistic and integral life.

*Building Strong Christian Communities*

To lead the church effectively, Mr. Rwangoga urged participants to strengthen their small Christian communities. He addressed common problems faced by these communities and provided advice on overcoming challenges. The vision of an ideal parish was also well explained.

The presentation by Mr. Naris Rwangoga was comprehensive and engaging. It provided a clear understanding of the role of the laity in the Catholic Church and the mission they are called to fulfill. By embracing these teachings and working together, the laity can significantly contribute to the church's mission of evangelization and societal development.
