Preventing Future Tragedies: Lessons from the Kiteezi Landfill Incident
Today's tragedy at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Landfill in Kiteezi serves as a wake-up call for all of us. On Saturday morning, a heap of garbage buried houses, people, and livestock following a heavy rainstorm on Friday night. Although no fatalities have been reported yet, many are still missing and feared dead. This incident highlights the need for urgent action to prevent such disasters in the future.
The Kiteezi landfill processes about 1,500 tons of waste daily. Heavy rains compromised its structural integrity, leading to a partial collapse. This type of incident is not isolated; it is a result of several factors, including improper waste management, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental challenges.
Improving waste management practices is essential. Properly separating waste at the source can significantly reduce the volume of waste that needs to be processed. Promoting recycling and composting of organic waste can also decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills, thereby reducing pressure on these facilities.

Upgrading infrastructure is another critical step. Landfills must be built to withstand heavy rains and other natural events.
