Kanungu, Uganda – 23rd August 2024:

In a significant move to empower the youth of Kinkiizi East, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of ICT and Member of Parliament for Kinkiizi East, today launched the much-anticipated digital mobile truck at the Kanungu Main Playground. This initiative, in collaboration with Huawei and the Uganda Institute of Communication and Technology (UICT), aims to provide free computer literacy training across the region, as part of a broader effort to equip the youth with critical skills for the modern job market.

The youth, who constitute approximately 73% of the population according to the 2024 census report, have been a focal point of Dr. Baryomunsi's development agenda. Recognizing their potential as the future of the country, the Minister has rolled out a comprehensive skilling project that targets over 5,000 youth in Kinkiizi East. This project not only offers computer literacy training but also integrates it with other essential skills like hairdressing and tailoring, fostering a culture of job creation and innovation.

The digital mobile truck, which will rotate through all the sub-counties in Kinkiizi East, is designed to bring technology to the doorstep of every youth in the area. The Minister highlighted that this initiative will enable the graduates to seamlessly integrate their newly acquired skills with the evolving technology trends, making them proficient in using modern machines such as embroidery equipment, color coding systems, and laser technologies that rely on computer operation.

In his address, Dr. Baryomunsi reiterated his commitment to enhancing ICT infrastructure in the region. He mentioned that the ICT hub at San Giovanni, which is nearing completion, will serve as a training center for the nearby communities. He also assured the residents that another ICT hub would soon be established in Rugyeyo, further expanding access to technology and digital education.
As part of his efforts to enhance computer literacy, the Minister revealed that he has previously donated computers to several institutions within the region, including Rutenga, Kinaaba, Nyakabungo, St. Charles, and Shunga, with each receiving between 10 and 20 PCs.

In a bold move to address concerns surrounding the Parish Development Model (PDM), Dr. Baryomunsi tackled the issue head-on. He emphasized that the youth should not be excluded from PDM benefits due to household ownership status, and stressed that more than one member from a family can benefit from the program. The Minister also issued a stern warning to corrupt officials who hinder the fair distribution of PDM funds, urging the youth to report any cases of bribery before participating in corrupt practices.

RDC Kanungu, Afande Ambrose Mwesigye, supported the Minister’s stance, pointing out that the youth often remain silent about corruption when they benefit from it. He urged the youth to speak up before engaging in bribery and assured them that all PDM-related corruption cases have been directed to the courts of law for justice.

The event concluded with the official launch of the digital mobile truck, followed by a group photo featuring the Minister, local leaders, and representatives from Huawei.

With these initiatives, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi continues to solidify his popularity and reputation as a champion for youth empowerment and development in Kinkiizi East. His dedication to fostering a digitally literate and skilled generation promises to drive economic growth and innovation in the region, setting a benchmark for leadership in Uganda.
