Kabale Pilgrims Embark on Sacred Trek to Namugongo Shrine by Editor

In a heartfelt expression of faith and tradition, over 200 pilgrims from the Kabale Diocese began their pilgrimage to Namugongo Shrine early Tuesday morning. This significant journey commemorates the Uganda Martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for their Christian beliefs from 1885 to 1887 under the rule of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda.

Pilgrims from the districts of Rukiga, Kisoro, Rubanda, and Kabale convened at the Kabale diocesan headquarters on Monday evening, participating in a Holy Mass at St. Mary’s Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale Municipality. At the break of dawn, Alphonse Biraho, a catechist at Christ the King Catholic Church Parish and the Chairperson of Pilgrims in Kabale Diocese, officially flagged off the pilgrims at 5:00 AM.

Joining the Roman Catholic pilgrims are five Christians from the Anglican Church of Uganda, underscoring the ecumenical spirit of this pilgrimage. Biraho emphasized that this ten-day trek not only honors the memory of the 45 martyrs but also fortifies the pilgrims' faith and hope in the Lord.

Paul Tumuhiise, a catechist from Katenga Hiika under Rushoroza Parish, is on his fifth pilgrimage. He aims to pray for world peace and for Christians to forsake evil and return to God. Zadok Agyendakyi, 77, from Buhara Catholic Parish, on his seventh journey, is praying for familial peace and good health. Bibiana Ayebare, 34, from Rubanda Catholic Parish, is undertaking her 13th pilgrimage, expressing gratitude for life and employment while praying for her country, herself, and her family.

The pilgrimage is inclusive, with the youngest pilgrim being 17 and the eldest 82, demonstrating a wide span of age groups united in faith and purpose.

The journey to Namugongo Shrine holds profound spiritual significance for Ugandan Christians, serving as a testament to their unwavering faith and dedication to the legacy of the Uganda Martyrs. As these pilgrims make their way to the shrine, they carry with them prayers for personal and communal blessings.

Stay tuned for further updates on their progress and the upcoming Uganda Martyrs Celebration on June 3rd.
