Celebrating St. Thomas More: A Homily of Courage and Faith by Bishop Callist Rubaramira
Yesterday, the Catholic Parliamentary Chaplaincy celebrated the feast day of their patron saint, St. Thomas More, at Parliament. The event featured a powerful homily delivered by Bishop Callist Rubaramira and was marked by the presence of numerous community members from the Kabale Diocese residing in Kampala. The KKCRA Choir led the congregation in uplifting and spirited singing, contributing to the event's joyous and reflective atmosphere.
In his homily, Bishop Rubaramira illuminated the life and legacy of St. Thomas More, portraying him as a paragon of courage and unwavering faith. "St. Thomas More stands as a shining example of courage, steadfast in his beliefs even in the face of adversity," the bishop began. He elaborated on More's profound conviction, which guided him through numerous challenges and adversities, drawing strength from his deep faith in Christ. "It wasn't ordinary human courage that sustained him but the profound strength he derived from Christ," Bishop Rubaramira emphasized.
The bishop recounted the story of St. Thomas More, who was ultimately convicted of treason and executed due to his steadfast adherence to his faith. "St. Thomas More exemplified readiness and devotion, demonstrating a strength beyond ordinary human capability," he remarked. "By heeding Christ's call and voice, he lived a life dedicated to Christ. This Christ-centered culture guided him to live virtuously, making his life great for Christ."
Bishop Rubaramira also drew a parallel between the courage of St. Thomas More and that of the Uganda Martyrs, highlighting their shared dedication to their faith. He encouraged the congregation to emulate this courage in their daily lives. "Similarly, the Uganda Martyrs showed immense courage, inspiring us to make daily choices for Christ and to build a Christ-centered culture in all our endeavors," he said. "We must not entertain fear, as fear leads to compromising the truth. In today’s gospel, Jesus reassured his disciples that God cares for us in all circumstances, and his love and care will always be with us."
The event was further distinguished by the presence of several notable figures, including the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among. In a significant gesture of support, she contributed 100 million UGX towards the development of St. Ignatius University in Kabale. This donation was part of a total of 160 million UGX raised to support the university's library, marking a significant milestone for the institution and highlighting the event's broader impact.
The celebration was imbued with a sense of unity and community as participants reflected on the themes of courage, faith, and commitment to Christ. Bishop Rubaramira's homily served as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing firm in one’s beliefs and drawing strength from faith, even in the face of formidable challenges. "Blessings to you all," the bishop concluded, leaving the congregation both inspired and uplifted.
The KKCRA Choir's inspiring music played a crucial role in the event's success, adding a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere that underscored the unity and spiritual strength of the community. Their performance was a testament to the choir's dedication and the deep sense of faith shared by all attendees.
In summary, the homily by Bishop Callist Rubaramira and the celebration of St. Thomas More's feast day was a profound and memorable occasion. It highlighted the enduring legacy of St. Thomas More and the Uganda Martyrs, serving as a poignant reminder of the power of faith and courage. The event inspired all attendees to live lives dedicated to Christ and to cultivate a Christ-centered culture in their daily endeavors, reinforcing the timeless message of faith, courage, and unwavering commitment to truth.
