International Labour Day and Minister Bahati's Vision for Uganda's Mineral Sector
On this International Labour Day, we take a moment to reflect on the vision and efforts of leaders like Hon. David Bahati, Uganda's State Minister for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, in promoting economic growth and opportunities in Uganda. Minister Bahati's recent call for well-established investors to engage with Uganda's mineral sector showcases his commitment to the nation's development and the creation of sustainable jobs.
Minister Bahati emphasizes Uganda's vast, untapped mineral wealth, including 12.8 trillion US dollars' worth of gold, iron ore reserves in the Kigezi and Tororo regions, and unutilized mineral assets valued at 12 billion dollars. By attracting investors to explore and mine these resources, Uganda can generate significant revenue to finance its national budget and invest in other critical sectors.
In his address to manufacturers, Minister Bahati stressed the importance of fostering a conducive and secure environment for investors through tax holidays, subsidies, and other supportive policies. This approach aligns with the government's goal to avoid exporting unprocessed minerals and instead promote local manufacturing and value addition.
Furthermore, Minister Bahati highlighted plans to establish 22 industrial parks across Uganda over the next five years, starting with five in the current financial year. These parks will offer free land and fully serviced amenities such as electricity, water, and internet, providing a robust foundation for industries to thrive and create job opportunities.
International Labour Day is a time to celebrate workers and their contributions to economic growth and development. Minister Bahati's vision for Uganda's mineral sector aligns with this spirit by paving the way for sustainable economic progress, job creation, and the empowerment of the nation's workforce. His emphasis on 100% profit repatriation for foreign investors ensures a balanced approach that benefits both investors and the local community.
As we honor workers worldwide, we commend Minister Bahati for his efforts to create a brighter economic future for Uganda through the responsible utilization of its mineral wealth and the promotion of local industries.
